The most important trend in the modern world is the mixing of styles, trends and genres. If earlier we could turn on a movie and safely determine whether a film was made in 3D or 2D technology, now we often get projects that use different techniques. The director chooses not a technique, but a general style, first of all focusing on the problem that needs to be solved, and using any means to achieve this. For example, puppetry technology is now widely used in the world, which adds texture and beauty to the visual range, together with 3D technology, which helps improve movements and facial expressions. As for mixing genres, today animated documentaries based on real stories have become widespread. At Belarusfilm we are also working on such films. Last year at the festival, a special jury prize was awarded to the Iranian film “The Fourth Wall.” When we watched it, at first we couldn’t figure out whether it was hand-drawn animation or live action, puppet animation or 3D animation. Then we realized that we were all together. At the same time, the overall picture looked very organic.

Neural networks are now becoming popular, but so far they cannot be used to create serious animation with a complex plot. Of course, they are the future, and neural networks are already being used as auxiliary tools, for example, for selecting style, colors, and creating simple decorations. This year we were sent an American film, which was based on a script written by a neural network, visualized and voiced by a neural network, but the story turned out to be interesting only for those who live in the city mentioned in the film, so we decided not to take it.
